Post for Jan 31

Hello All,

For this post, choose a song whose lyrics you would classify as poetry, and describe/list the literary devices the songs uses.

For example, one song that I like and that I feel can be classified as poetry is Leonard Cohen's "Anthem." I would classify it as poetry because it uses parallelism and antithesis and a multitude of symbols and metaphors, as in this stanza:

The holy dove
she will be caught again,
bought and sold
and bought again:
the dove is never free.

In addition to these literary devices, I like the song's theme, the idea that our imperfections are what give our lives meaning; it's a paradox: our weakness is our strength.

I chose Lady Gaga's song called "Speechless", and here is part of the song that really speaks to me:

"Could you give it all up if I promised boy to you? That I'll never talk again and I'll never love again. I'll never write a song, won't even sing along. I'll never love again, so speechless, you left me speechless, so speechless."

This song is all about loving someone who seems to love you back, but truly doesn't. Her use of repetition in words like love, again, and speechless really emphasize the pain she is going through. Gaga's song is very relatable, because some people may have felt that they were in love with someone who didn't love them back.

  2. I chose Lil Boosie song called "I'm Still Happy", and I chose this song because I relate to the lyrics word from word.

"Through all the pain and the struggle, I still smile
House arrest on my leg and I still smile
Still chessing even if I'm going to be gone a while
Still going to get visits from my youngest to my oldest child
Walk in my house loook in my closet you should see this shit
I come from nothing I can't believe this shit."

I like this song because it reminds me of the struggle of living in a high poverty area and having the ability to over come all the negativity that's around. It's much of related to my life and the issues I have to face. There are rarely any music that speaks on what's really happening in life.

  3. "Hush Hush" by Pussycat Dolls
I would classify "Hush Hush" by the Pussycat Dolls as poetry because it uses parallelism and the rhyme scheme it goes like aa,bb,c as in this stanza:

"I never need you to be strong
I never needed you for pointing out my wrongs
    I never needed pain,
    I never needed strain
My love for you is strong enough you should have known"

The song's theme is about broken up love and taking someone who loves you for granted. She talks about how he pushed her to her limit and she couldn't stand being with him any longer. He was taking her for granted by judging her all because he felt like he would loose her and in the end he ends up losing her because of the way he was. I like this song because I feel that many could relate to the song. In many relationships people tend to take one another for granted. They are to afraid of getting hurt and loosing their partner that they end up doing hurtful things and in the end the partner gets fed up and ends the relationship.

  4. I'm excited to represent a little Death Cab For Cutie! This song is called "Summer Skin" and it has no chorus or verses, just three stanzas.

    "Squeaky swings and tall grass
    The longest shadows ever cast
The water's warm and children swim
And we frolicked about in our summer skin

    I don't recall a single care
    Just greenery and humid air
Then Labor day came and went
And we shed what was left of our summer skin

On the night you left I came over
And we peeled the freckles from our shoulders
Our brand new coats so flushed and pink
And I knew your heart I couldn't win
Cause the season's change was a conduit
And we'd left our love in our summer skin"

I just love this song and the beat is hypnotizing. A few literary terms I can find are a hyperboli and I feel like the entire last stanza is a euphemism.

  5. I would consider "Every Rose has its Thorn" by Poison as poetry. Symbolism is used quite a bit throughout the song. The use of anaphora and repetition is seen in the chorus:
    Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
    Every rose has its thorn

  6. "So Beautiful" by Manafest

    Every mile I drove
    Every city and home
    Another mile stone,
While you never left me alone
Though I don't always get it,
    How you made me
    Saved me
    Forever I'll tell it

The Artist who wrote this song was the lead singer of the band. The theme of the song is basically overcoming everything he went through with G-d on his side. Throughout the song he talks about everything he went through, the ups and downs, but he's happy because G-d is his strength. He also says that he wouldn't understand what he went through but he's ok with it because he trusts' in His word. G-d is his strength and his motivation and he says he will forever share that with the people he comes encounter with.

  8. "Successful" by Drake.
This song I would classify to be a form of poetry because it uses literary devices through out the song.

"This lost boy got fly without peter pan,
And my delivery just got me buzzing like the pizza man,
In person I am everything and more,
I'm everywhere these other niggas never been before,
But inside I'm treading waters steady trying to swim ashore,
I'm on a shoppin spree to get whatever is in store,"

In this part of the song and through out, the artist uses both rhyme and allusion (about peter pan). The artist describes how all he wants is to be successful with all the hardships that he confronts. Another literary device he uses is persona, he uses this to describe his situations and obstacles. The artist strongly uses imagery as well, he describes and draws pictures of his situations.

    "Careful" by Paramore

I settled down a twisted up frown
    Disguised as a smile, well
    You would have never known

    I had it all
    But, not what I wanted
'cause hope for me was a place uncharted and overgrown

    You'd make your way in
I'd resist you just like this

You can't tell me to feel
The truth never set me free
    So, I did it myself

    Open your eyes
    Like I opened mine
    It's only the real world.
A life you will never know

    Shifting your weight
    To throw off the pain
    Well you can ignore it
    But only for so long

You can't be too careful anymore
When all that is waiting for you
    Won't come any closer
You've got to reach out a little more
    More
    More
    More, more

The truth never set me free
The truth never set me free
The truth never set me free
    So, I'll do it myself

I classified these lyrics as a poem because it uses similes and metaphors in the first couple of stanzas. It also has eye rhyme in the first couple of stanzas as well. The song is about a person having everything they could possibly want, but what they needed most importantly in their life could not be found. The persons' feelings were in control of them at times. Basically, this person was hurt at a point in their life and had to pretend like nothing was wrong in front of others. They had to put on a smile and go about the day.Until, they realized that you cannot let things from the past hold you back from acheiving what you really need out of life, but they would also have to gain the courage to get to that point in their life.

  10. I chose the song "Castle Walls" by T.I. featuring Christina Aguilera. The three stanzas that stood out to me the most were:
Cause see you can't see the castle through the walls till it falls

    [Chorus]
Everyone thinks that I have it all
But it's so empty living behind these castle walls
    These castle walls
If I should tumble if I should fall
Would any one hear me screaming behind these castle walls
There's no-one here at all, behind these castle walls

    [Christina Aguilera]
    Nobody knows I'm all alone
Living in this castle made of stone
They say that money is freedom but I feel trapped inside it all
And while I sit so high up on a throne
I wonder how I can feel this low
On top of the world it's beautiful
But there's no place to fall.

I would classify this song as poetry because of the use of parallelism and alliteration. In addition, I like the songs theme of that even though it seems that one may have it all, deep down that person knows that not everything is perfect. This song relates to me in ways in which that sometimes I look like everything in my life is just perfect, but deep down inside I may be going through a lot that is secretly tearing me apart.

The song I chose was Jack Johnsons "angel", in this song he uses rhyme and its lyrics are describing someone in your life that can easily bring a smile to your face. I can relate to this song whether it be my mom, dad, sister, neice, or boyfriend, they all can bring a smile to my face.

    I've got an angel
    She doesn't wear any wings
She wears a heart that can melt my own
She wears a smile that can make me wanna sing

One song that I feel can be classified as poetry is Jill Scott’s “Golden.” I believe it is classified as poetry as there are numerous literary devices utilized throughout such as repetition, rhyme, simile, metonymy, and parallelism. Below is part of the song in which illustrates a few of these devices.
I'm holding on to my freedom,
    Can't take it from me,
    I was born into it,
    It comes naturally,
    I'm strumming my own freedom,
    Playing the god in me,
    Representing his glory,
    Hope he's proud of me

I believe this does a great job depicting how the human life should be lived. Meaning, we should worry less and “live” more as many times we are not living life to the fullest nor do we enjoy the simply things in life.

I chose The song named "Beautiful" by Eminem for the reason that in most of his songs he speaks about rough times he has experienced through out his life. He expresses them though out this peice of the song in forms of Similes and Synecdoche.

"But you have to walk a thousand miles
In my shoes, just to see
What it's like, to be me
I'll be you, let's trade shoes
Just to see what it'd be like to
Feel your pain, you feel mine
    Go inside each other's mind
Just to see what we find
Look at shit through each other's eyes"

  14. ave you ever loved someone so much, you'd give an arm for?
not the expression, no, literally give an arm for?
when they know they're your heart
and you know you were their armour

and you will destroy anyone who would try to harm 'her.
I chose this song because of the rhyhms is has, throughout the whole song. I love how metaphor he uses about giving arm. IN the music video if ur not a fan you can see hes referring to the tattoo he has of his daughter.

I chose "Let It Be" by The Beatles because it reminds me of a poem. There is rhyme. There is use of parallelism. There is also use of synechdoche.

"And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be"

  16. I chose "Impossible" by Shontelle. I think this could be a poem because it includes metaphors, similes, connotations, and she is using the first person point of view. For example in this stanza:

Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the roof top
Write it on the sky love
All we had is gone now
    Tell them I was happy
    And my heart is broken
    All my scars are open

I liked this poem because I thought it was interesting on how she was kind of blaming herself for "the breakup" but she switches from first person point of view to the 2nd point of view for a few lines then back to her first person.

  17. I would classify the song “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd as poetry. It uses imagery, rhyme, allusion, symbols, and metaphors. This song basically has everything. Here’s the song:

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
    blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
    Wish you were here.
My favorite part of the song is when they use imagery when they say “We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground.” The lyrics really give off a vivid image.

  18. I chose the Spanish song from Camila titled "alejate de mi" ("Get Away From Me")because I agree with the theme that when you love someone you hurt them without wanting to do so. The irony in the lyrics is that the lover tells his love leave him even though his true internal conflict is that he desires for her to stay despite his mistakes.
    Spanish:
    "Y alejate de mi amor
Yo se que aun estas a tiempo
No soy quien en verdad parezco
Y perdon no soy quien crees yo no cai del cielo."
Here, he tells her to leave him for he is not what she thinks and he apologizes with a metaphor for not "falling from the sky".In Spanish, the lyrics follow ABBC rhyme scheme.

  19. I am the Walrus - The Beatles

    Mister City Policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like Lucy in the Sky, see how they run.
    I'm crying, I'm crying.
    I'm crying, I'm crying.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
    Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob (part of the song)

i believe this whole song is poetry. theres allusion, rhyming and parallelism i believe. poetry in a sense that its a very detailed piece of art thats easy to analyze like any other poem (sarcasm)

  20. "Back to December" by Taylor Swift

I decided to use this song because unlike many of us who never go back and admit to messing up she does in this song. She realizes that she did not love him enough and that if she could go back or have another opportunity she would love him right. I think this is a perfect example of poetry because sometimes poems are used to say something that in any other form it wouldn't be said.

So this is me swallowing my pride
Standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night
and i go back to december all the time
it turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you
wishing id realized what i had when you were mine
I go back to december, turn around and make it alright
I go back to december all the time...

"Back to December" is an ode to the relationship that she had with someone. It is also a confession from herself. She admits to her mistakes even if it makes her seam as the evil one.
In the song synecdoche is used for example she uses december as the whole break up. "freedom ain't nothing but missing you", a hyperbole, freedom is not just that but her exaggeration lets you into how she truly feels.

I chose the song by ABBA called "Love Isn't Easy"
    We gotta have patience
    Love isn't just a sensation
Some of the time it gets rough
Love isn't easy but it sure is hard enough
(Sweet, sweet, our love is bittersweet
I chose this song as a poem because there is rhyme and the word love is used as a synecdoche.

  22. “Your Love Is Deep”
    Jami Smith
    (Chorus)
    Your love is deep
    Your love is high
    Your love is long
    Your love is wide x2
    (Verse 1)
Deeper than my view of grace
    Higher than this worldly place
Longer than this road I travel
Wider than the gap You filled x2
    --(Chorus)(Verse 1)--
    (Bridge)
    Who shall separate us
Who shall separate us from Your love
    Nothing can separate us
Nothing can separate us from Your love
    --(Chorus)--

Throughout the song, there is repetition to emphasize the deep meaning behind the song. Some lines rhyme with eachother and to me, that is a big indication of poetry. There is also a sense of visiual imagery taking place and an extended metaphor to describe the love of God.

  23. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

And as we wind on down the road,
Our shadows taller than our soul,
There walks a lady we all know.
Who shines white light and wants to show?
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all, yeah, to be a rock and not to roll.

These lyrics use rhyme, verse, as well as rhyme scheme to tell the story of a woman who has money and possessions, and owning all those materials will not buy her passage to heaven upon death.

Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
    She's over-bored and self-assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

    Hello, hello, hello, how low?
    Hello, hello, hello, how low?
    Hello, hello, hello, how low?
    Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
    I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us

    A mulatto, an albino
    A mosquito, my libido
    Yeah, hey, yay

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

    Hello, hello, hello, how low?
    Hello, hello, hello, how low?
    Hello, hello, hello, how low?
    Hello, hello, hello

I chose this song from Nirvana because it remainds me when i was a little girl and i used to listen to this music with my older brother, it brings me good memories.
All over the song we can find many litterary devices such as persona, rhyme, alliteration, and imagery.

    Nathalie

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
    I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us

In this particular stanza we find two literary devices, persona and rhyme.

This part of the song uses repetition of words and also has rhyming in it. That's why I see it as poetry. I like this song because it says that when love come it knocks u down but you just have to get up and find another love.

Sometimes love comes around (love comes around, love comes around)
    and it knocks you down
    just get back up
when it knocks you down (knocks you down)
    Sometimes love comes around
    and it knocks you down
    just get back up
when it knocks you down (knocks you down)

    Wouldn't it be nice

Music lyrics are easy to be classified as poetry because they have a catchy jingle that rhymes, but to be honest some music of this era shouldn’t even be called music.
"Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong"
The lyrics use parallelism, rhyme, and repetition.

    * I chose this because it has rhyming in it. This also represent a lot of how i react to things. I speak what's on my mind, and i stay true to however i feel and whatever i say. This song represents that.

You know people say a lot that they really don’t mean.
Last night I told a little white lie
Hoping you would forget the scene.
We’re feeling like a movie under bad porch light
Couldn’t help myself when you held me tight
    I unapologize
    I meant every word
Won’t take back the way I feel about you
    Can’t unsay what you heard
    Cause you heard me right
And I won’t try to fighting back and hide my feelings for you

Send "Higher" Ringtone to your Cell

When dreaming I'm guided through another world
    Time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
'Cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place
'Cause there's a hunger, a longing to escape
From the life I live when I'm awake
    So let's go there
    Let's make our escape
    Come on, let's go there
    Let's ask can we stay?
    Can you take me higher?
To the place where blind men see
    Can you take me higher?
To the place with golden streets
Although I would like our world to change
    It helps me to appreciate
    Those nights and those dreams
But, my friend, I'd sacrifice all those nights
If I could make the Earth and my dreams the same
    The only difference is
To let love replace all our hate
    So let's go there
    Let's make our escape
    Come on, let's go there
    Let's ask can we stay?
Up high I feel like I'm alive for the very first time
Up high I'm strong enough to take these dreams
    And make them mine

I choose the song higher by creed because it has great use of alliteration throughout the song. Also, samples of assonance are used.

I chose the song Parabola by Tool. Throughout this song the writer uses free verse, repetition, and personification as literary divices. Heres a few stanzas:
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality, this holy experience.
    Choosing to be here in
This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

    Alive, I
From these stanzas the writer makes the personification of the body. Here he talks of the body as something that provides comfort. I appreciate this song for the singer's enjoyment of life although it does sound like he's worshipping his existence, which is wierd. Honestly, I enjoy the tune more than the lyrics.

  30. I picked a song by the fugees called "killing me softly"

here is some parts of the song:

"Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him, to listen for a while
And there he was, this young boy, a stranger to my eyes"

The way the song was wrote just reminds me of potery. It has a theme of romance and love. It usues methaphors. It has depth, emotion, and confusion through out the whole song which most poetry does. It has rhyme but of course it would since it is a song.

  31. Chipmunk and Chris Brown - Champion

I’m always pushing myself to the limit
    making sure I stay ahead
you made me who I am, from the words you said
    Some people have to learn
    some people wait there turn
    some people but not me
    I was born a champion
    Some people have to fight
    some people give their lives
    some people don’t believe
    I was born a champion
but I was born a champion
but I was born a champion

    [Verse 2]
This gon’ be the realest s*** I ever wrote
off the record, no camera’s, forget a quote
some of my family doing good, most doing dope
I from Virginia where they hang the n***** by a rope
I used to see my momma getting beat down!
Is that the real definition of me now?
I fell off, back on my feet now
headed to the sky, can’t even see down
award shows, I poured my heart out
and people still steady trynna point my flaws out
and I’d be lying if I said it ain’t get to me
but I’m a champion, legend, history

I chose a song by Chipmunk and Chris Brown called Champion because I love the message it sends. People commit mistakes and try to do everything possible to fix what was done in the past, but because of those mistakes people have their opinions about you and once that opinion is there, there is nothing you can do to change it because people hold on to others flaws and try to hold you back by not letting go of whatever the mistake was. They classify you as the mistake, for example, Chris Brown physically abused Rihanna and after a year people still hate him for what he did, anything he does is not good and every other mistake he commits is added to what was previously done and is now known as a woman beater. This song can relate to other mistakes as well. People dwell on the past and will not let you move on because you’ll always be “The bad guy.” The words used against you soon become you because you start to believe it and give up with attempting overcoming the struggle. But you should take your mistakes to do better and not give in to those who do not believe in you or want to break you down. You have to put a fight and block all the negativity that is thrown your way. In the second verse he mentions a personal aspect in his life and compares it with the mistake he committed. He questions himself, if he became what he always said he was not going to be. You just have to believe in yourself and fight for what you want. He also uses end rhyme in the second stanza.

  32. "The Trees" by Rush
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their please.

    The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
    As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights.
    "The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet, axe, and saw.

In this song there are many examples of symbolism and personification . Also, the entire song is an extended metaphor about the extreme methods that are used to promote supposed equality.

"The House that built" Me By Miranda Lambert
I know they say you can’t go home again
I just had to come back one last time
Ma’am I know you don’t know me from Adam
But these handprints on the front steps are mine

Up those stairs in that little back bedroom
Is where I did my homework and I learned to play guitar
I bet you didn’t know under that live oak
My favorite dog is buried in the yard

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself
If I could walk around I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me
This song uses alot of imagery and sybolism. Miranda paints a picture about her childhood in this song, and is really descriptive of her childhood house growing up. This song is symbolic to her childhood and all the wonderful memories she had growing up in "the house that built her", or made her into the woman she is today. This song is one of my favorite country songs by her, not only because of the rhythm and beat of the song, but also because of the meaningful lyrics.

I wrote on Kia Shine from Memphis, Tn. "Anything worth having is worth working for, if it comes easy it don't mean nothing you have to go through it to get to it." I chose this part of the songs because it rhymes and it has meaning to it. Any goal in life that comes easy isn't worth the happiness; working hard by working smarter will carry a person longer then looking for the easy way out. This is a strong remark to me it makes me strive for the best.

  35. “So Jealous” Tegan and Sara

I don't want to be part of the problem
I try so hard to get roughed up
Fists on up, it looks that easy
It looks that way to me
It looks that way to you
But then there's you telling me I can
Then there's you screaming say something
I want the ocean right now
I want the ocean right now
I get so jealous that I can't even work
There I am in the morning
    I don't like what I see
    I don't know how it's become such a problem
Keep you up all night if I try to remain calm
How can they ask why I feel so angry
Do you see my problem if I never explain it
But then there's you asking me how long
Say something, it's taken me so long

I chose this song because I think we can all relate to it at some point in life. I can interpret this song as a problem that one seems to avoid and doesn’t want to realize it. No matter how hard you try to make others understand how you feel you find it impossible; therefore, you just work around it.

  36. A Song For Mama lyrics
    Songwriters: Edmonds, Kenneth B;

    "You taught me everything
    Everything you've given me
    I'll always keep it inside
You're the driving force in my life, yeah

    There isn't anything
Or anyone that I could be
And it just wouldn't feel right
If I didn't have you by my side

You were there for me to love and care for me
    When skies were gray
    Whenever I was down
You were always there to comfort me

And no one else can be
What you have been to me you will always be
You will always be the girl
In my life for all times

Mama, Mama you know I love you
Mama, Mama you're the queen of my heart
Your love is like tears from the stars
Mama I just want you to know lovin' you is like food to my soul"

This song has Imagery, symbolism, and similie's. This song uses similie's because it states his mom is like food to his soul. This also goes along with Imagery because you can visualize what the songwriter is saying. It symbolizes about how much his mother means to him and the things that a mother would do for her child. I like this song because I can relate to what he is saying, and i feel the same way about my mom.

  37. the song that i choice was In The End by Linking park. in this song, there is a lot of metaphors. for example, in the entire he has this meaning about not wasting your time and start living in the moment. the lyrics are:
    (It starts with)
One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
    To explain in due time
    All I know
    time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
    The clock ticks life away
    It’s so unreal
    Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on but didn’t even know
    Wasted it all just to
    Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
    To remind myself how
    I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so (far)
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
    In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn’t even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn’t even matter
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There’s only one thing you should know
    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn’t even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn’t even matter

Social Distortion - Don't Drag Me Down
I classify this as poetry because it has alliteration, rhyme, antagonist.

    Don't Drag Me Down lyrics
    Children are taught to hate
    Parents just couldn't wait
Some are rich and some are poor
    Others will just suffer more
    Have you ever been ashamed
And felt society try to keep you down, I begin to watch things change
    And see them turn around

The artists writes down flashbacks as he has experienced his own lyrics. All his words consists of denotation.

  39. Kanye West- Champion

    Did you realize
    That you were a champion?
    In their eyes)
Yes I did, so I packed it up and brought it back to the crib
Just a little somethin' show you how we live
Everybody want it but it ain't that serious
    That's that shit
So if you're gonna do it, do it just like this
    Did you realize
    That you were a champion?
    In their eyes

You don't see just how wild the crowd is?
You don't see just how fly my style is?
    I don't see why I need a stylist
When I shop so much I can speak Italian
I don't know I just wanted better for my kids
And I ain't sayin' we was from the projects
But everytime I want it, layaway or a deposit
My dad'll say "When you see clothes close your eyelids"
We was sort of like Will Smith and his son
In the movie I ain't talkin' 'bout the rich ones
'cause every summer he'll get some
Brand new hare-brained scheme to get rich from
And I don't know what he did for dough
But he'd sent me back to school with a new wardrobe and hey!

When it feel like living's harder than dyin'
For me givin' up's way harder than tryin'
Lauryn Hill say her heart was in Zion
I wish her heart still was in rhymin'
'cause who the kids gonna listen to? Huh?
I guess me if it isn't you
Last week I paid a visit to the institute
They got the Drop Out keepin' kids in the school
I guess I'll clean up my act like Prince'll do
If not for the pleasure, least for the principle
They got the CD then got to see me drop gems
Like I dropped out of P.E.
    They used to feel invisible
    Now they know they invincible

    Did you realize
    That you were a champion?
    In their eyes
This is the story of a champion
Rounders in the mob and they pop the guns
Stand up stand up! Here he comes
Tell me what it takes to be number one?
Tell me what it takes to be number one?
This is the story of a champion
Rounders in the mob and they pop the guns
Stand up stand up! Here he comes
Tell me what it takes to be number one?
Tell me what it takes to be number one?

  40. A song lyric I want to include in my project "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland.

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
    Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me.

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly.
    Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?

This song uses similies to explain how troubles will vanish somewhere over the rainbow. I like the lyrics and I feel like I can relate to the lyrics that is why I am adding them. Maria Zuniga
